Office Evacuation Plan

Fire Warden Responsibilities

Wardens are responsible for ensuring evacuation routes are clear at all times, checking that fire doors are not blocked or propped open, knowing the location and operation of all fire extinguishers and alarms, guiding employees during evacuation drills and real emergencies, checking assigned areas to ensure everyone has evacuated, reporting to the designated assembly point and accounting for their area employees, and reporting any fire safety issues to management. Wardens should receive additional training and should be recognizable during an emergency, typically wearing a high-visibility vest or badge.
Server Room and IT Fire Safety
Server rooms and IT closets require special fire safety consideration because of the concentration of expensive equipment and the risk of data loss. Install CO2 fire extinguishers instead of dry powder in server rooms because CO2 leaves no residue that could damage equipment. Consider installing a gas-based fire suppression system like FM200 or Novec 1230 for larger server rooms. Ensure under-floor and ceiling spaces are protected by smoke detectors. Maintain proper cable management to reduce fire hazards from tangled wiring. Ensure adequate cooling to prevent equipment overheating. Install fire-rated walls and doors around server rooms. Have a backup and disaster recovery plan for data in case of fire. Test all fire safety systems in server rooms regularly.
Office Fire Drills
Conduct fire drills in your office at least twice a year. Drills should be announced in advance to avoid panic but should be as realistic as possible. During the drill, activate the fire alarm and observe how employees respond. Time the evacuation from alarm activation to full building clearance. The target should be under 3 minutes for a single floor and under 5 minutes for a multi-story building. After the drill, gather feedback from floor wardens and employees. Identify any problems, such as blocked exits, confused employees, or equipment issues. Document the drill and use the findings to improve your fire safety plan. Fire Safety Training for Office Employees
