How to Use a Fire Hose Reel

Using a fire hose reel is straightforward but requires practice. Step 1: Ensure the shut-off valve at the reel inlet is closed. Step 2: Pull the hose from the reel, walking toward the fire. Do not allow the hose to kink or become tangled. Step 3: Open the shut-off valve fully to allow maximum water flow. Step 4: Adjust the nozzle to the desired spray pattern (jet or spray). Step 5: Aim at the base of the fire and move the nozzle in a sweeping motion. Step 6: Advance toward the fire as you gain control. Step 7: After the fire is extinguished, close the shut-off valve, rewind the hose onto the reel, and ensure the system is restored to its ready position. Important safety points: Always maintain a firm grip on the nozzle because the water pressure creates a strong reaction force. Do not use the hose reel on electrical fires because water conducts electricity. Do not use the hose reel on oil or grease fires because water will spread the burning liquid. Maintenance and Testing

Quarterly testing should include operating the shut-off valve to ensure it moves freely and fully opening the valve to flow water through the hose to verify the system is delivering water. Annual maintenance by a qualified technician should include inspecting the hose for cuts, abrasions, or deterioration, testing the hose at 1.5 times its working pressure, inspecting and cleaning the nozzle, lubricating moving parts, checking the water supply and pump system, and replacing any damaged or worn components. All maintenance and testing should be documented in the fire safety log book. Hoses should be replaced if they show signs of significant wear or damage, typically every 10-15 years.

Common Problems and Solutions

Hose reel systems can develop problems that require attention. If the hose will not pull out easily, check that it is not kinked, tangled, or improperly wound on the reel. Rewind the hose carefully. If water does not flow when the valve is opened, check that the water supply isolation valve is open, the water tank has sufficient water, and the pump is operating. If there is insufficient pressure at the nozzle, check that the water supply meets the required pressure and flow rate. Pressure-reducing valves may need adjustment.
